Question: What are the benefits of baby sign language?

Answer:

  • Baby sign language helps to reduce tantrums and tears of terrible twos by providing a method of communication from a very early age.
  • Signing with your baby reduces frustration for you and your baby by bridging the communication gap in the pre-verbal years.
  • Teaching baby signs will strengthen the bond between babies and their parents, siblings and caregivers.
  • Signing with your baby reduces the amount of time you spend playing guessing games.
  • Baby sign language can be used to get to know your babies interests and thoughts.
  • Using baby signs stimulates brain activity and speech development, resulting in higher IQ.
  • Signing with your baby helps to accelerate the speech process, providing a strong foundation for early literacy.
  • Teaching baby signs encourage babies to talk sooner.
  • Signing with your baby provides an advantage to your child’s further development of vocabulary, spelling and reading ability.
  • Baby sign language increases your toddler’s interest in books and pretend play at an earlier age.

Question: When should I begin signing with my baby?

Answer: You can begin signing with your baby as early as birth or as late as 30 months. Our experience is that babies can begin signing back to you from as early as 8-9 months old. We suggest that the best time to start signing with your baby is when your baby is able to wave hello or clap their hands. This generally indicates that the baby has the dexterity in their hands and arms to be able to complete a sign and the ability to copy you.

Question: Will teaching baby sign language delay my babies speech development?

Answer: No. Signing with your baby will not delay your babies speech development, quite the opposite in fact. Teaching your baby to communicate with baby sign language will increase their comprehension of words from a much earlier age. Because you are constantly repeating the word whilst performing the sign, you are enhancing their comprehension of words, which in turn accelerates their speech development. Your signing baby is likely to have a greater vocabulary before they are able to talk compared to non signing babies.

Question: How long will it take until my baby signs back to me?

Answer:This will depend on how old your baby is when you begin baby sign language. For very young babies, it may take months for your baby to begin signing back to you. For older babies and toddlers, it may take only a matter of days for your baby to begin signing.
